About the Organization

PURULIA MANOVIKAS KENDRA in brief

PMVK was founded on 1st Dec 1988 with just one child and today this institute serves about 70 children or beneficiaries, collectively, in its Purulia as well as its Balrampur unit. More than 150 children have crossed the portals of this institute, many of whom have entered the main stream life enjoying their respective married lives.

PMVK is a day care centre for children suffering from mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, multiple disabilities, and those with hearing impairment. The children undergo various types of therapies like physiotherapy, music and dance therapy, yoga therapy etc. Each therapy is given according to the individual’s requirement.

Besides these therapies, the children are trained academically too and we are proud that the efforts put in by our efficient teachers have borne fruit and a few of our students have been admitted in schools for normal children.

Vocational training is also imparted to these children without which the entire effort to normalise these individuals is a waste. Vocational training are provided in various trades such as:-

1)    Weaving of woollen shawls

2)    Making woollen telephone covers and T.V. covers

3)    Making doormats out of jute fibres

4)    Crafting shopping gift bags out of jute, cloth and hand-made paper

5)    Candle making

6)    Envelope making

7)    Diya painting

8)    Tailoring activities

9)    File making

We endeavour our best to make these children competent in any one trade so that they can earn their livelihood in whatever small way they can.

These students celebrate and enjoy a number of events and festivals round the year, such as:-

1)    Bengali New Year

2)    Rabindra Jayanti

3)    Independence Day celebrations

4)    Parent counselling week

5)    Teacher’s Day celebrations

6)    School Foundation Day ceremony

7)    Cultural Program

8)    Picnic

9)    Film shows

10)                      Republic Day celebrations

11)                      Participating in State level special Olympics held in Kolkata

12)                      Saraswati Puja celebrations

13)                      Birthday celebrations

14)                      Pulse polio camp

15)                      Sports

and other events as per requirement

Every child is given the opportunity and made to participate in the cultural program held in various functions. Children enjoy dancing, singing and happily take part in dramas.

However the main motive of our institution is to make these children independent. We do try our best for the same, but much is left to be desired as our hands are tied due to lack of funds.

There is a dire need for a vehicle. Many such unfortunate children stay in nearby villages or on the outskirts of Purulia town but are unable to avail of the therapies provided by our school as they cannot come to school due to lack of conveyance.

There is an urgent need to recruit more special educators and other therapists, a need for some therapeutic instruments etc but again, due to lack of funds we, sadly, cannot meet the requirements.

Actually, the very existence of the school is at stake. We have not received any grant-in-aid since the year 2004. We have, somehow, managed to survive by taking exhorbitant loans together with a few donations received by us now and then.

It is getting extremely difficult to make ends meet as, besides the funds required in keeping the institute alive we, also, have to repay the huge loans taken by well wishers. What will be the plight of the mentally retarded and hearing impaired children should, God forbid, the school close down? Mind you, this institute is the only one of its kind in the entire district of Purulia.

Despite such huge obstacles we are determined to continue selflessly with our efforts so that these unfortunate beings don’t become more unfortunate!

One thing is sure; It is not possible to achieve this aim without your help and support!
