Bio-Data Founder Secretary
Public Welfare & Development Society (PWDS) formerly Swami Vivekanada Sevashram is a Secular, Voluntary Organization have been concentrating on various developmental activities towards the rural and tribal people in Gobichettipalayam Taluk, Erode District, Tamilnadu. Since 1986 with dedication and determination of the stewardship of Mr K.A.Natarajan, Aged 56, who hails from remote village Kanakkampalayam. Even at his schooling day (he studied only VIII std) he has understood and realized the poverty around him, the vulnerability forced him to concentrate on the social services. Fortunately or unfortunately he was affected by Leprosy and forced to leave his home, walked down to the capital Chennai at his 18th age and worked in several places, landed at Thanjavur, where he organized the Leprosy affected people and slum dwellers, made them aware of love and affection. Subsequently he cleaned garbage in the area with the assistance of people.
More importantly around 60 leprosy families were rehabilitated from beggary attitude and they started concentrating on self employment. For their livelihood with the magnanimous assistance from SOS-PG, Belgium, constructed houses for them with the persuasion of Natarajan. At the year of 1986 he moved and came back to his native, collected volunteers and incepted a voluntary organization called Swami Vivekananda Sevashram under Tamilnadu state societies Registration Act of 1975 to intensified the developmental activities. Infact, the SVS organization with the leadership of Mr. K.A.Natarajan started concentrating on the tribal economic development by approaching Indo Germen Social Service Society (IGSSS), Ecomwel and other magnanimous organization.
As a model project a tribal village called Thottankombai in the westernghate of Tamilnadu-Karnataka Border, formed self help Groups and provided training for them in sustainable agriculture. More importantly, their unaffordability in the concentration of agricultural practice, lack of ploughing (tiller) machine, oil engine for the irrigation purpose and constructed 57 tiled houses, instead of gagelike huts. Mr. K.A.Natarajan approached the above mentioned funding agencies and rural ministry CAPART and provided this tribal village houses, oil engines, tiller, and wells. Those tribals are presently concentrating on sustainable agricultural practice and these tribals are empowered in the socio-economic status. Moreover for the past 20 years, he providing school note books to children those who are at the rock bottom level in the poverty line. Every year 100 such students are getting this benefit. Having understood the prevalence condition of STD/HIV/AIDS among tribals and others in T.N.Palayam Block of Erode Dist the Founder approached the State AIDS Control Society, Chennai brought the intervention programme.
Though he is qualified lesser he manages a team of committed staff and conducting the activities intensively. With support of APAC-VHS-USAID will take care and support project for people living with HIV/AIDS in this year. Because of Secretary`s persuasion a comprehensive change is happening, his self drive and motivation enthused the volunteers and staff team involving in the developmental activities towards the poor and down trodden. He has the future plan of bring the tribal people into one fold as federation for their collective efforts and making the people self reliance and self dependent.
Hence, our Founder Mr. K. A. Natarajan Awarded Best Citizen and Raj TV award to his untired and innovative voluntary services in order to contribute for the poverty alleviation and social cultural and education standard of rural and tribal poor and down – trodden. In the initial stage of his social services he faced innumerable difficulties like he was also forced to go for begging, and married the daughter of a beggar, despite his conviction and determination converted the difficulties into positive approach and rendered the services without any deviation. His family consist with Mrs Ponnammal (wife), Subash Chandra Bose (son) and a daughter who get married and grooming her to be a collector for which he worked and achieved the score but she lost by love marriage.

To sustain the rural women for self-employment
PWDS has created awareness on environmental issues through National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC). The program was supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, New Delhi. The campaign focused on climate change / carbon emission. Shri V K Nallasamy IFS, DFO, delivered chair-talk and Janab. Syed Batcha, Tourist Van owner’s Association, Gobipchettipalayam distributed the saplings to the participants. The program was technically supported by the regional resource center, C P R Aiyer Foundation, Chennai. The beneficiaries were the auto, van, tempo, mini-door drivers and the members of the above said Association. They were motivated to implant the saplings / seedlings in their houses and common places.
Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), Chennai, is supporting financially and technically since 1999 in prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections.
The target tribal people were Solagas and Ooralies community in TN Palayam, Erode district. Totally 13 villages for 15,000 tribal people and 50,000 general public were covered for this activities.
In the reporting period, PWDS concentrated on prevention activities like awareness programs, counseling, IEC activities and promotional activities like referral and linkages services to nearby ICTC, PHC, HIV and GH for HIV prevention.
The organization conducted need assessment for sustainability and development for rural women. With the support of Nehru Yuva Kendra, Erode, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, a tailoring course program was implemented. About 30 rural girls and women attended the 3 month training course on “Tailoring” and they were from Gobichettipalayam block area. At end of the course, Mr. R. Jaya Prakasam, District Youth Co-Ordinator, NYK, Erode, distributed the course certificate to all the beneficiaries. After the training program, the beneficiaries were motivated to tap the resources from the Social Welfare department, Erode for widow pension, tailoring machine and self-employment.
To promote afforest ration through Forest Department

To ensure Child/PLHAs welfare through ‘GIVE INDIA’ sponsorship
PWDS, The organization targeted the Forest ranges of Kadampur and Anthiyur for forestry developmental activities. It covered 20 tribal villages, for afforest ration project. About 220 village level programs were organized to promote afforest ration in the selected areas. The District authority of Forestry, coordinated to sensitize the people in collection of forest products, afforest- ration, wild-fire prevention, community kitchen garden and water harvesting etc.
More over, The medical camps were conducted for tribal people. After the program the chronic cases were referred to the government hospitals for further treatment. About 2000 tribal people were benefited Through this project.
The organization extended his services in naturopathy field with the support of National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune, under the Ministry of Healyh & Family Welfare, Dept of AYUSH, Government of India. An orientation for two days was conducted for SHG women members in Gobi area, Erode District. About 50 members were participated and sensitized to follow the naturopathy method in their regular dietary system. A booklet on ‘honey’ was published and distributed to all the beneficiaries. The program focused on yoga, natural foods for dietary method and life style. It was facilitated by Dr.Saravanan, and Dr.Pasupathy.
Through the GIVE INDIA online donation sponsorship, 29 students received educational benefits out of 50 expected cases. Each student had the amount for Rs.1860 for the year.
From the above, children were benefited under the scheme of “Give joy to a poor child from a PLHA family on her/his birthday”. Mr. Kishore Kumar Ladha, Manager, ICICI Bank, Give India representative participated and distributed the prizes and gifts to the beneficiaries directly on 23/3/2009 with worth about Rs. 50,000 for the purpose of education and birthday celebration of children. The program news was propagated leading local cable network/TV channels.
1 Educational Support for rural poor student
About a quarter century years period, Our organization supported 25 to 100 students every year by providing educational aids, financial support, Scholarship assistance etc. by the help of donors. Some of our donors are; Shri R K Raman, Industrialist, Chennai, Tamilnadu Governor H E Surjith singh Barnala, Srinivasa Trust, Mumbai, Official Trustee of Tamilnadu, High Court, Chennai, Parle product Limited, Mumbai, Sangalp-NGO, Jindal Trust, Indian Oil Corpn. Etc.
We are giving secondary preference to the top score students in school level, District level or class level, so they have got awareness/better family environment. We have educational support policy to help poor who can not continued even their elementary/ High school level because of various reasons among the children of widows, Dalits, Tribals. We want to help those who are in the position of school dropout and in difficult to get basic education to attain their higher education. During the 2009-2010 educational year we given help to 40 students, the list herewith attached. On every July 5th- suddenly school reopening the schools in June- we do this service and sent the feedback on july10th The parents would use the help other than education purpose when we help later period.
This year we expect the donation option as following:

2 Children’s day Happy Celebrations
In 1999 Tamilnadu AIDS Control Society selected our NGO for HIV/AIDS awareness.
Then we turned to do Counseling, Behavior change Communication, Networking and Linkages activities for the infected. During the service we observed that the infected people particularly widows seriously thinking of their children’s future, after their sudden death cause of HIV. From 2004 we work for the peace of their mind by Common Pongal, Witnessing their HIV status to public. The children’s birthday function is one of the strategy to strengthen their minds setup. We wonder that the invitee VIPs happy for this activity and given donations and sponsored the families for Nutrition, Education and medicines etc. This gives hope to the children and parents of HIV infected.
It is very helpful that this annual programs became monthly once, by the help of Give India donors. We want to change this program as children’s day program instead of Birthday celebrations because of some experience we had.
From this year we want celebrate this kind of children’s program on November 14th the Children’s day and feed back to donors on Nov 20th. We expected to celebrate 50 children aged between 3 to 14 years.

4 Naturopathy and Yoga Health Education Program for 2 days for 20 participants + Resource persons & prog staff (General Public, Women, Students separately 50 programs per year)
To create and increase awareness among community about the preventive, promotive and curative aspects of Naturopathy, its costs effectiveness, easy adaptability and benefits for prevention and treatment of common ailments. The program is indented to create an interest particularly in looking after basic primary health care needs and attain health self-sufficiency through Naturopathy and Yoga.
Activities Proposed for one day Program:
Awareness Speech on Yoga Practice, Benefits of Natural foods, Using methods of enema and Personal hygienic delivered by a recognized Medical practitioner having BNYS doctorate degree.
Distribution of printing/copying material on Herbs/medicinal plants, Naturopathy and yoga.
